Connecting Holly Springs: A Closer Look at Right Turns, Bridges and Sidewalks
A Holly Springs town engineer shares updates on some traffic projects including ones funded by the 2018 Transportation Bond.
One of the most frustrating traffic challenges in Holly Springs is the lack of a right turn lane on NC 55 southbound to Main Street. During heavy traffic times, this intersection can turn into parking lot causing delays for everyone. There is good news on the horizon! According to Utilities and Infrastructure Engineering Manager, Michael Leonas, construction for a new right turn lane is slated to begin next spring. The project will extend the right turn lane from Avent Ferry Road to Main Street along NC 55, which should ease congestion and improve travel for all.
The project is mostly financed from the 2018 Transportation Fund approved by voters. The project will be done simultaneously with the construction of a right turn lane on Main Street turning onto Holly Springs Road. The town hopes to approve the construction company during the October 15th town council meeting.
Updates to this project and several others were shared during the September 3rd council meeting.
Holly Springs Road Update
During the same meeting, Leonas shared updates on the Holly Springs Road widening project which is also being funded through the 2018 transportation bond. During the meeting, Leonas pointed out the new bridge allows for emergency crews to respond to emergencies without worrying about flooding caused by heavy rain storms. In late September, the traffic shifted on to the new lanes and bridge.
Crews are expected to finish widening this section of Holly Springs Road between Flint Point Lane and Sunset Lake Road by the end of 2025. As for the section from Flint Point (near the fire station) to Main Street, construction is expected to begin next year and will last for two years. However, the section of Holly Springs Road from Main Street to NC 55 has be deferred for now due to funding.

Other projects
Last November, I visited an open house for a new sidewalk between Arbor Creek and Trellis Pointe Apartments. According to Leonas, the project is ready to move forward, with construction expected to begin next spring.
Avent Ferry Road Sidewalk
Leonas also shared an update on an effort to build a sidewalk along Avent Ferry Road that will connect sidewalk near UNC Rex Hospital to the downtown area. Construction for this project will begin in spring or summer 2025.
