Who's Running for Town Council
The filing period is now over and we know who's running and who isn't for Holly Springs town council.
Edited: 8/3 with links to candidates
Let’s begin with who isn’t running for office.
Current town council members Shaun McGrath and Aaron Wolff both decided to not run for re-election. They each served one term.
They both served for four years. If you remember, Kristi Bennett resigned late last year. Danielle Hewetson filled the seat with her term expiring at the end of the year as well.
With the departure of Bennett, there’s now a 2-year unexpired seat available as two 4-year seats open.
Here is the list of candidates for the 4-year seats. There are two openings. I’ll link any information I’ve also found about each candidate. (I’m not linking personal social media sites)
Jack Turnwald: Turnwald spoke out against the town mayor’s decision to not sign the NDO (non-discrimination ordinance) here and here. They also spoke out against some bills before the General Assembly.
Chris Deshazor: Deshazor is currently on the planning board. Here’s a 2014 story where he talked about a Wake County Schools reassignment plan.
Brian Dennis
Danielle Hewetson: Here’s an article when she was selected to the council. This link is to her Facebook page but it is a mix of council business and her election announcement.
Staci Almquist
Here are those who filed for the 2-year unexpired seat and any links of information I could find.
Travis Groo: Groo ran for NC House 41 in 2022 and NC Sen 17 in 2020. He’s currently the chair of the Wake County Libertarian party.
Brian Norman: Norman spoke against the signing of the NDO. As mentioned in the article, he is also the senior pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Cary.
Scoop Green: Scoop is the former Executive Director of the Holly Springs Chamber. Here are a couple of links: link and link.
Election day is November 7th. You will need your ID to vote.
A personal note: Scoop is my husband. We moved to Holly Springs for his job in 2004. We’ve stayed here because we made it our home. I started this newsletter as a side project for myself. I’m practically an empty-nester and there are days I miss being in a newsroom. I plan to continue the newsletter as best as I can. I believe this transparency is important and I will continue to add this note during these next few months of the campaign.
